China has become the largest source of overseas students and the third most popular study abroad destination for international students after the US and the UK.
According to the statistical report by the Chinese Ministry of Education on international students in China for 2018, 492,185 international students from 196 countries/regions studied in 1,004 Chinese universities. 258,122 of them were enrolled in degree programmes, accounting for 52% of all international students. The top 6 provinces/cities with the largest number of international students are: Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Liaoning Province and Tianjin.

As No. 1 study abroad destination in Asia and No. 3 in the world, China is making great efforts to strengthen its higher education particularly in terms of teaching and research.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings is designed to assess university competitiveness on some important pillars, including research, teaching, knowledge transfer as well as international outlook. In the THE World University Rankings 2023, two Chinese universities are ranked in top 20 in the world, for the first time in the history of Chinese higher education.
